WEB LAYOUT AND OPTIMIZATION
CREATING A FAVICON Part (A)
Fortunately, creating the graphic and adding it to a Web page is super easy—especially when you have the free ICO Windows Icon file format plug-in for Photoshop from Telegraphics.com.au and you know enough HTML to add a line of code to the area of your pages. To design, create, and install a favicon on your own (or your client’s) Website, follow the steps outlined here.
STEP : 1
Start by downloading the free (although donations are accepted) Windows Icon Photoshop plug-in from the Telegraphic Website at http://www.telegraphics.com.au/ sw/#icoformat. Aft er downloading the fi le, install the plug-in and restart Photoshop.
STEP : 2
Within Photoshop, select File > New to open the New document dialog box. Under Preset choose Web, and since a 16×16 px file might be way too tiny to work with, set the width and height to 64, and then click OK.
STEP : 3
If you already have a logo or other graphic element that you’d like to use for the favicon, paste that graphic into the document and resize it to fi t within the canvas. Th en select Image > Image Size to open the Image Size dialog box, set the width and height to 16 px, and click OK. If the image looks good at the reduced size, proceed to Step 4. For example, Figure 7-2 shows a side-by-side comparison of a graphic at 64×64 px (left ) next to the same file reduced to
16×16 px (right).
